Autumn Make Over

A little garden make over is now complete in time for autumbal sunshine and for those guests wishing to snatch a few hours relaxing with a book and glass or two of something.

The pool has been removed for the next season and replaced with a gazebo - excellent for late seasonal barbecues. We have four new loungers, an additional four seating area, newly pruned trees and bulbs planted ready for spring. We have also disposed of the table umbrella and replaced it with a clean bigger umbrella which has UVC 80.

Pictures to be added shortly. Lets hope the sunshine stays for a few weeks yet.

Another excellent sized double bedroom and space enough for an additional bed. The room has white washed walls and original black floor tiles. The room benefits from a private terrace with plants, table and chairs for relaxing and sunbathing. Although the views are really of the sky, the terrace does get hot. The room also has a good sized en-suite shower room.

One recent guest described this room as Moroccan. A good size double bedroom with room for an additional bed if needed. Views are restricted here hence the price but a good location at the end of the house, quiet with an excellent wet room style shower room.

The season is now in full flow here in Beziers, fetes galore, music festivals and the annual Feria still to come in a few weeks. The beaches are full, the sun is shining (okay today is a mere cloudly and a few droplets of rain but the garden welcomes it). We are full for Feria week but can recommend other places if you still wish to come to the festival.

Despite this, Beziers is not crowded. There is still room to walk around, tables available at cafes and bars and its lovely to just sit and take in the atomosphere at your own pace rather than a bustling crowdy city. With flights opening up from Beziers to Norway, Sweden and Germany, Maison De L'Orb has felt quite "continental" in the last few weeks and we have made some good friends.

In the kitchen this week, I have been doing my usual entertaining but also trying something new with a receipe found in my old french cookery book so apologies for none copyright etc. This is my take on french doughnut toast which is ideal for breakfast with a mug of hot chocolate or late at night as a go to bed treat. Either way, by itself this is sublime succour. You can, if you like, turn this into a dinner party doughnut-allusive dessert by whizzing up 150g hulled strawberries, 4 tablespoons icing sugar and a spritz of lemon juice in the blender, to make a sauce to pour.

•2 eggs
•4 teaspoons vanilla extract
•60ml full-fat milk
•4 slices from a small white loaf or 2 slices from a large white loaf, each large slice cut in half
•25g butter, plus a drop of flavourless oil for frying
•50g caster sugar

Method
Serves: 2

1.Beat the eggs with the milk and vanilla in a wide, shallow bowl.
2.Soak the bread halves in the eggy mixture for 5 minutes a side.
3.Heat the butter and oil in a frying pan, and fry the egg-soaked bread until golden and scorched in parts on both sides.
4.Put the sugar on a plate and then dip the cooked bread in it until coated like a sugared doughnut.

From LIVING IN FRANCE magazine.

We are lucky enough to live in one of the best houses in Beziers overlooking the river where lovely people come to stay with us throughout the year. Unlike other places to stay in the area, we have been told that we are somewhat “different”, but a difference in a nice way. We have guest areas with books to choose and relax with, art on the walls, two very sociable dogs, and a garden of fruit trees. The bedrooms have good comfortable beds; the bathrooms are simple with good showers. We also cook and prepare a truly fantastic breakfast.

Some things are life are important to us and therefore feel they must be important to our guests. Good wine and good talk is important to us, so it may be important to you too. Broadband Internet is essential to us, so we assume it may be for you and that’s why the house is WI-FI Good food is essential to us (and our dogs) and naturally we think you would enjoy good food as well.

We are open all year so ideal for those who fancy a spring or autumnal get away break when out of season. The bedrooms are simple, not fussy and the walls are white washed. We offer a proper hospitality tray in the room with real milk – we never assume our guests prefer UHT cartons. We use fruit from the garden when making our breakfast jams and preserves.

Our garden overlooks Pont Vieux and is the best place to catch the sunset whilst enjoying a preamble drink. Dinner can also be prepared and cooked using local produce. But whilst everything here is lovely, it is not grand. Our guests stay awhile, read, chat and sleep well, and we watch their tension drop away. That makes us happy. We don't pretend Maison De L’Orb is a hip boutique hotel, nor are we a middle of the road boring hotel…but you will discover your own charm when you’ve arrived.

Strange as it may sound as I sip a chilled juice in the garden, we are receiving requests for Christmas 2011. Last year we announced our festive celebrations in July so forgive me now if we are two months early. So far, this is what we are organising…

3-NIGHT CHRISTMAS PACKAGE 2011
A genuine spirit of hospitality prevails at Maison De L’Orb – a hosue of decorations, a “gift” in every room and a blazing wood fire in the dining room. The focus as ever is on food and festivity and there is always a stash of tangerines, nuts, nibbles and chocolates to pick at.

Christmas Eve – Saturday, 24th December
Explore Beziers in the morning, the shops are open and there is always festivity in the air. Something fabulous from Jeff Du Bruges in your room, home-made mince pies in the guests room, a pre-prandial glass of champagne, four-course dinner to include coffee.

Christmas Day – Sunday, 25th December
Continental breakfast, a four-course Christmas lunch with all the trimmings (Vegetarians catered for naturally –we do a fabulous mushroom nut roast) and our very own Christmas pudding. A light buffet supper in the evening.

Boxing Day – Monday, 26th December
A (not too early) delicious and lazy brunch, afternoon tea with home-made Christmas cake, a four- course a la dinner to include coffee.

Bank Holiday – Tuesday, 27th December
Breakfast and farewells.

5 The wine list is well-chosen, interesting and fairly priced. There were also soft drinks, juices, syrups and beers on offer.

6 The bedrooms are airy and light with a clean, stylish look and the bathrooms are modern with good plumbing. Our room overlooked the garden and even had a hospitality tray with home-made cookies. Complimentary toiletries and a lovely welcome pack were a nice surprise.

7 The owners have two well-behaved boxer dogs that joined us in the garden for a spot of sunbathing and a chilled glass of rose. The garden is open during the day and looks onto the river l’Orb.

8 The town of Beziers is a mere five minute walk away.

9 The Canal Du Midi is a ten minute walk away. Beaches are also local.

Just one of the great recent comments we have received and we are pretty chuffed. So chuffed we are re-running a previous blog post. We introduced a whole new start to the day with a choice of two exceptional dining experiences.

We offer an informal breakfast of hot drinks, juices, pastries and fruit for guests looking for a quick fix and for those with less time to linger in the morning. This is ideal for those wishing to eat, drink and grab a bag before exploring the city of Beziers or heading to the beach.

There’s something happening in the garden…

After two years of hard work spent on redecorating and bring the main house into the 21st Century, our attention is now turning towards the garden and the laverie. Look at any old photograph and picture of Beziers of Pont Vieux and there you will see this proud and historic building used as a wash house for the many boats that used to grace the river l’Orb.

It has always been our intention to look at this building in a new light and that time is finally coming. We are currently looking into the possibility of opening up the ground floor area to incorporate a summer kitchen and bar area with a new floor to feature an open deck eating area. What a great view when reclining in our new Moroccan sofas while sipping mint tea or a glass of something else.

We have used the space last summer when hosting many music events in the garden and once for an art exhibition but this time we want to make a lasting impression. We are hoping work will finally start at the end of the main summer season so at least our guests won’t have to put up with any major works.

The garden itself is currently in full bloom. The vines are coming through, the orange tree is starting to flower and something is also happening with our pear and apple trees. All fruit is used in our breakfast jams and preserves. Thankfully, the powers that be in Beziers answered our call and have trimmed the tress overlooking the river in front of the garden offering our guests a lovely view of the old bridge and river. We are hooping that our second call requesting the bridge be lit up in all its glory at night comes next.

We are also hoping to start work again at the back of the house which we are hoping to install a health suite area on the ground floor and two/three further bedroom suites. All being well this should be ready sometime next year but will keep you all updated as to progress.

Behind The Scenes

We have had to be careful when setting tariff levels, we are all aware that many a purse string is as tighter than ever be it hotel, restaurant or a holiday. We believe Maison De L’Orb offers excellent value for money, only now it’s more important than ever.

Despite prices shooting up everywhere, we still stick to the best. If we didn’t (or couldn't’t) we would simply close the doors. We always use organic and locally grown food, we are on friendly and speaking terms with our local butcher, good unsalted butter used (beurre des Charntes for those who are wondering…) and our coffee comes direct from Fortnum & Mason in London…a luxury I know but so worth it.

Value for us means that all our guests can help themselves to our breakfasts while many a penny pinching establishment place that they should eat on a plate. It also means we can reduce our rates in our winter season and welcome guests who are here when the streets are even quieter and the smell of autumn is in the air.

We (well me, Mark) have recently completed the final proof for The Ninth Wave which is aimed to be published autumn 2011. Excerpts from the book can found via www.mbinmore.blogspot.com

When asked recently for a radio interview how I would describe the book, I could only say poems and short stories reflecting life, love and death. It’s not as morbid as it sounds but there is a focus of water through much of the work. There are also continuing volumes completed with intriguing titles such as Even When Tonight Is Over, Amid The Falling Snow & I Breathe Shallow Deep Inside Of Me. For me, the art of writing is fun and not sure at the present time if these volumes will go forward- who knows. Maybe is there is a positive response.

Editing has also started on Maison De L’Orb – The House By The River, a book which tells the history of the house by discovering the rooms and objects inside.

Personally I really like our lounge sofa and chair but some fellow guests have commented that they don’t like the colour (which is dusty mauve and not charcoal as pointed out). Well, the good news is that they will be recovered.

Despite being open for the last two seasons, we have never really had an official opening...until last weekend when at the last minute we decided to throw open our doors, light the barbecue, dim the lights and crack open the champagne.

Apologies for the late invitations but thank you to the many people who came and enjoyed a good evening. We had many friends, press, local business people from Beziers as well as our house guests resulting in some excellent publicity and more bookings. To those of you who couldn't make it but sent a RSVP, a goodie bag has been sent on to you.

AUTUMN AT MAISON DE L'ORB

Unlike many Chambre d'hotes in this region we are open all year so if you now thinking of taking a mini break to the region of Beziers our new autumn/winter rates start on 1 October. See main blog page for tariff.

The weather is still good, breakfast can be taken in the garden and our menu changes with the season. Breakfast is a delight with home made pastries, home made granola and hot eggs and bacon cooked to order. We are currently harvesting the fruits of our garden into many chutneys and preserves.

We are also pleased to have a display of home made cards from a local artiste on display and are available for purchase.

Here at Maison De L'Orb we run a series of events throughout the year which residents and local people living in the area can enjoy.

Wednesday 23 June
Our monthly book club event - along with the customary drinks and nibbles. Our book club is currently full, however if you would like to join please let me know. The club is usually held in our garden in the evening apart from the winter months when we hibernate in our guest lounge area.

Saturday 3/4 July
Creative writing weekend - NOW FULLY BOOKED. This will be our third creative weekend and a chance for people to explore their creative side, be it music, writing, dance or music. We have guest speakers from London and the Beziers region joining us. We are hoping to have our fourth event sometime in the autumn.

Bastille Day
THE event of any French calendar. We have a prime location here at Maison De L'Orb with Pont Vieux in front of our garden being the centre point for celebrations and fireworks. Open house barbecue and drinks.

Feria
Beziers is not Beziers without the annual three day Feria event in August. We will be holding an open barbecue in our garden during the Feria week for guests and friends.

Liberation Day
Every August Beziers celebrates the liberation of their city. Another chance to join us for drinks and nibbles in the evening.

Holistic September
During September we will be offering a holistic weekend featuring several guest speakers and therapists. This will be a full package which will include readings, treatments, food and board. We are currently arranging dates.

Situated next to the Cathedral is "Chez Toi, Chez Moi" at 32 Rue Vienet and run by Sammy and his wife, this is a fabulous place for eats. Fine food, great meat and fish and full use of open oven. The place has recently been refurbished and also has a basement for private functions. We were there again New Years Eve and a great time had by all.

One of the best restaurants in the area and believe me, we have tried a few!

We are currently re designing our website at http://www.maisondelorb.com so bear with us! We have updated our booking details with rooms available from April at €45 and €50 per night (NOT per person). As described already, the decor is simple, original tile flooring, exposed stonework and beams, lime washed walls and simple white wash paint, French style beds and original shutters with cotton flow drapes to hide the midday sun. Cotton sheets, fresh flowers, plasma television, wifi-internet connection and a hospitality tray with tea and coffee making facilities add to the ambiance of the room. Price is per room per night and includes full continental breakfast. Full English breakfast is served as a supplement, see website for further details and menu examples.

We will also be offering as a extra an intimate four course dinner complete with wine. Menus will change with the season but examples can be found on our website shortly. The price stays the same as last season, €25 per person and includes a good bottle of rouge!

This Time Of Year

So loving this time of year. Christmas is now in full swing and we are having a lovely time here at Maison De L'Orb. It is our open house season, mulled wine ready to go, home made cookies ready to be eaten and the house decorated with beautiful trees and lights, it makes everything more alive.

We will be having a special Christmas at home followed by guests and friends arriving for New Year celebrations. Some of you have already emailed us for 2010 rates, easy and simple, there is no change, everything remains the same but will update you all very soon.

Our new dining area is almost complete. Whilst decorating we discovered three huge beams hidden behind brick and 1970s plaster so they have been lovingly restored and add a nice feature to the room. We have also had time to redecorate our guest lounge area where one can enjoy a quiet read, watch television or a DVD - we have an extensive library or simply chill. The whole house if wifi accessible so ideal for those business people who cannot bare to parted from emails and social networking sites.

Beziers/Maison De L'Orb Review from The Traveller (November 2009)

When thinking of an escape to the south of France, Languedoc- Roussillon doesn’t always spring to mind up against the big hitters of the Riviera. But in actual fact it offers visitors plenty to see and do and is surprisingly good value for money. With this in mind we decided to opt for a short break in Béziers, a small city in the Hérault department midway between Montpellier and Perpignan and just inland from the Mediterranean. It’s often overlooked by its larger neighbours but without reason as it is a worthy destination in its own right. With the Spanish border only an hour away by car on the auto-route, the influences this has on the area are clear from the outset. The Féria de Béziers bullfight, based on the Spanish corrida, takes place in August every year and attracts a million visitors over the 5-day event.

During the rest of the year, Béziers is relatively quiet and ideal if you want to avoid hordes of tourists. And, with an average of 300 days of sunshine per year, Languedoc-Roussillon is perfect for year-round short breaks.

After a leisurely breakfast of home made rolls, eggs, mulled fruits and endless cups of fresh cafe, our hosts Mark and Ben gave us more information on what the city had to offer. Béziers is steeped in history and our first port of call was the fortified Cathédrale St- Nazaire situated on a hill overlooking the city with dramatic views out to the sprawling vineyards and the River Orb below.

The beautiful Romanesque-style cathedral, which dates back to the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, witnessed terrible bloodshed during the crusades that took place in 1209 and led to the massacre of 20,000 inhabitants, many of whom had been taking refuge in the cathedral. It’s hard to imagine that such carnage took place as the streets of the medieval part of the city are so peaceful. We meandered back to the city centre discovering the façades of private mansions with their hidden courtyards and sumptuous spiral stairways along the way.

After a spot of dégustation at the wine festival we headed to the market hall to sample some of the regional food specialities. Strolling round taking in the sights and smells really worked up an appetite. You can also dine in the market so thankfully our growling bellies didn’t have to wait too long. The informal setting of La Gargote des Halles might fool some into thinking it’s only simple fare but the meal, a seafood platter with a rich aioli followed by a cassoulet, was delicious and proved to be anything but basic. It truly was the perfect way to round off our short break.

DISCOVER...the local icons
As Béziers is the wine capital of Languedoc, it would be wrong to visit without an obligatory dégustation. Every October, the grape harvest festival takes place to celebrate the new vintages, which luckily happened to be in full swing when we arrived. A party atmosphere prevailed down the tree-lined Allées Paul Riquet with stall after stall offering red, rosé and white varieties that we were more than happy to sample. Another must-see when visiting the region is the UNESCO World Heritage Canal du Midi, which links the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. The picturesque canal was built by Paul Riquet in 1666 and marked a period of prosperity for the region. Today a statue of him takes pride of place on the street which bears his name.

STAY
Béziers is a good-sized city for exploring on foot and we stayed at the newly opened Maison De L'Orb situated in the Arab quarter by the old bridge and views of the river. We were even picked up at the airport free of charge. The place is quirky, modern, french chic and steeped in history having been used as a safe house during the Nazi occupation. The food is excellent, the welcome pack a must and excellent toiletries supplied. Dinner can be arranged at an extra.

With room rates starting from €75 including breakfast and for two people it offers excellent value for money.

Hope you are all well. We are enjoying a peaceful week before the Christmas Market visitors arrive next week. The market is preparing to open in Beziers, which if last year is to go by, will feature home made gifts, foods, drinks and local products. An ideal place to visit if you are stuck for a present idea. Every local village and town will be opening their market over the next week or so. We are also planning a trip with our guests to Narbonne and Carcassonne as well as a lunch trip to Faugueres to a fabulous eatery.

Can it really be November? Summer seems so long ago and yet the sun is still shining high above Beziers. This month sees Maison De L'Orb play host to two events, a Creative Writing Event and a Pre Christmas Taste Event. We look forward to seeing you all very soon.

In other news, the new dining area is coming on and looking great!

Peut-ce vraiment être novembre ? L'été semble tellement il y a bien longtemps mais le soleil brille toujours haut au-dessus de Beziers. Ce mois voit Maison De L'Orb ; Centre serveur de jeu de corps rond à deux événements, à un événement créateur d'écriture et pré à un événement de goût de Noël. Creative Writing Weekend

Saturday 21st November and Sunday 22 November sees Maison De L'Orb hosting a private creative writing weekend. This will give an opportunity for people to create new pieces of work, share ideas, network and discuss different genres of writing as well as enjoying a quiet weekend in Beziers and sampling good home cooked food. Our spies at Ryanair have now confirmed their summer flights to Beziers commence from 29 March 2010 and there will be three flights a week from London Luton (Bristol TBC) - same schedule as 2009 which is great news. Beziers looks like becoming the "hub" for Ryanair in this region. We are already taking bookings for next season and already Ryanair are offering impressive cheap air tickets. The monthly book club meet at Maison De L'Orb. We usually hold this event in our garden but this time our year no doubt we will be by the log fire with some mulled wine and nibbles. Thank you for all your emails, however the club is full at this time. We are currently reading two french wartime memoirs.

Ryanair Confirmed for Beziers 2009/10

Confirmed a few months ago and now reconfirmed - Ryanair will continue to fly from London Luton to Beziers twice weekly for the winter season. This is great news especially in the current economic climate but also for people who commute weekly as well as travellers.

I have been invited to the Imperial War Museum in London to glance through some files they have which lists Maison De L'Orb as a safe house and what information they have. Obviously this is all very exciting and valuable for my book which I have recently started. I will share with you what I find out!

A Taste Of Beziers

Taste is something that needs to be trained, developed and educated. Since 1992, Taste Week has been the opportunity to do just that. It has become a week of real education in terms of “good” taste, on the chosen themes. The town council, which organises the events through its cultural department, has already tickled the taste buds of its local youngsters with chocolates and grapes at previous events and this year has chosen cheese as the theme for the week.

The event kicked off last weekend in Beziers.

And to add to the event, this Saturday sees our own Maison De L'Orb Taste Event, with new wines of the season and home cooked treats. See you all then!

Saturday 17 October will see us hosting an intimate wine tasting (and nibbles...) event. We will be focusing on new wines of the season from many local suppliers as well as tasting what we hope will be a 2010 classic. Weather permitting in the garden, if not indoors with log fire if need be.

As you know, I mentioned before that Maison De L'Orb was used as a "safe" house during World War Two and I am currently sourcing some valuable information which I am hoping to incorporate into a book. What this book will look at I have no idea, but I am looking into life of other Beziers people during this time. There is already some initial interest which is excellent. We have our very own book club here at Maison De L'orb where we meet once a month with a glass of something, a tray of nibbles and discuss. I have recently been sent a new preview edition of Moondrop To Gascony by Anne-Marie Walters, available in November and recommended. The club is full at this time but we will be inviting new members next spring.

End Of Season

A great way to end the season here at Maison De L'Orb, an intimate barbecue, great food, ambiance and music from friend and recording artiste Dean Saunders - thanks to everyone who attended. Currently sorting through a few pictures.

We have now decided to take the bull by the horns and redecorate our dining and guest area in readiness for the winter season. At the moment its all white walls and new electrics...we have a few weeks before we host several private parties booked in for October - check our website for availability if deciding to take a weekend break here. If you do, the weather is still lovely albeit slightly fresher in the evenings. The hordes of people have left and its a lovely area to take a stroll and have a quiet lunch and cafe. We do have parking spaces outside for those who may be driving over and can recommend some lovely places nearby to visit.

New Season

September and the new season is upon us, but as many locals say, this is the best month to see Beziers. The days are still beautiful, the beaches are nice and spacious and the evenings are slightly cooler. We are fully bocked for this month but can recommend other places if you are wanting to visit and more than welcome to pop by for cafe and drinks when you are here Thank you to everyone who came last Saturday and met Luc, we enjoyed your company and the feedback from the guests was great.

We are having an intimate barbecue this Saturday for guests, friends and neighbours with music supplied by Dean Saunders who will be singing tracks from his new album plus a few old standards.

Throughout our first season here we have been asking guests what was good, what could be done different, what they liked etc. Here is the feedback as promised.

Cheerful, friendly service and relaxed atmosphere

Our informal, lively dining area where you can eat good, honest home cooked using lots of local produce as well as home made chutneys and preserves.

The breakfast is NOT just a piece of bread and cafe but a lovely selection of breads, poached fruits, muesli, and full English if requested featuring quality food. You could always have more!

Slightly more expensive than other B & B in Beziers, however the rooms and location make up for that.

Evening dining is available and the wine list is well-chosen, interesting and fairly priced. There was also some great sherries (and tapas), local cider and beers

The bedrooms are airy and light with a clean, stylish look and the bathrooms are modern with good plumbing.

No children!

The house is situated on the river Orb, with views to Pont Vieux and surroundings making it just peaceful.

The garden complete with fruit trees, sunbathing areas and a shower for those really hot afternoons.

The heart of Beziers is a mere ten minute walk up hill and full details of what to do, where to go and what to see are available in the lovely welcome pack.

Grand Gala de Catch de l'Ecole de catch de Béziers samedi 29 août 2009 à 18h sur les Allées Paul Riquet à Béziers.

Jean Corne et Lionel Bouillet sont tous les deux entraîneurs à l'Association Biterroise de Catch.

- Jean Corne, ancien champion d'Europe, écrivain de "La Vérité sur le Catch", vedette de TF1 dans les années 70-80 ( preuve en fichier joint avec photo de Jean Corne dans le programme télévisé de 1975 ), sera dans le rôle de l'annonceur le 29 Août.
- Lionel Bouillet, ancien catcheur de l'Elysée Montmartre remontera quant à lui sur le ring pour l'occasion pour faire face à ses élèves.

Tony "Zell" Trivaldo, Chester Alan, L'Ange Noir, Archmed, Vinsnake, Ayuko, Dwayne Evil, Nicolas sont les noms de scène des jeunes élèves qui montreront le fruit de leur entraînement ce soir-là.

Just a reminder that the winter flight schedule from Ryanair has been released. Good news is that flights from Bristol and London Luton will continue over the winter season though the Luton flights go down to just two a week on a Saturday and a Tuesday making Beziers a great place to come for a long weekend especially as the Tuesday flight back to London is early evening. Fête Du Faubourg

This weekend saw another Beziers fete finishing with another great firework display.

To give some history...

The Fête du Faubourg, (22nd of August each year) is the anniversary of the liberation of Béziers in 1944. The day starts with a Service of Remembrance in the Church of St Just during the morning, followed at mid-day, by the laying of Wreaths at the Faubourg War Memorial. In the evening there is a Grand Banquet on the Banks of the River Orb, provided by the local Residents‛ Association (Groupement du Faubourg) and the presentation of a “Son et Lumiere” and fireworks presented by the Mairie (Town Council) and after the fireworks the evening ends with a Concert in the park. The theme of the son et lumière has commemorated the life of Jean Moulin leader of the French Resistance during WW2 who was born in Béziers in 1899.

Maison De L'Orb is located in the Faubourg, (False Town, really the town outside the Medieval walls, suburbia), which spans the river Orb at Béziers, in the Languedoc (Occitan) region of Southern France.

To celebrate this event we hosted a small intimate garden party with guests, friends and neighbours some of which can still recall the events of wartime Beziers. We were told that part of our house was used as a safe house by the local resistance group during the war sheltering those escaping the Nazi regime. It made us feel rather humble.
